Demand for activated carbon in the US will increase by 15.8% annually

June 04, 2018

According to the latest research report of the American Group of Friedonia, the market demand for Activated Carbon (including fresh activated Carbon and recycled activated carbon products) in the United States will increase at an average annual rate of 15.8% in the next few years. By 2014, the market demand for activated carbon in the United States will reach 1.2 billion pounds (about 545,000 tons).
The Friedonia Group stated that this prediction is based on the US federal government’s imminent control of mercury emissions from coal-fired thermal power plants. According to industry sources, mercury can be removed by injecting activated carbon into coal-fired power plants. It is reported that the mercury emission control regulations for coal-fired thermal power plants in the United States are expected to be passed in 2011 and will be implemented before 2014. At present, some states in the United States have passed their own mercury emission control regulations for coal-fired power plants, which has led to strong growth in demand for activated carbon in the United States since 2009. Once U.S. federal regulations begin to be implemented nationwide, U.S. powdered activated carbon use will actually take off in 2013 and 2014. In addition, mercury emission control in cement kiln furnaces and industrial boilers in the United States will also stimulate the growth of demand for activated carbon.
The Friedonia Group stated that the demand for activated carbon in mercury emission control applications will increase more than fivefold before 2014 to 520 million pounds per year (236,000 tons/year). It is reported that an activated carbon injection system for mercury emission control in a large industrial facility will consume up to 2 million pounds (908 tons) of activated carbon per year. The demand for powdered activated carbon will grow faster than granular and other shaped activated carbon products because only powdered activated carbon can be used for mercury emission control in coal-fired thermal power plants. In 2014, powdered activated carbon in the United States will account for two-thirds of the demand for activated carbon, and demand for Granular Activated Carbon will also grow strongly. The main application area of this type of activated carbon is the municipal wastewater treatment system.
Regionally, the growth in demand for activated carbon in the southern and midwest regions of the United States will be the strongest since these regions are the gathering places for production facilities of US thermal power plants, cement plants, and other large industrial boilers. These industrial facilities will require activated carbon. Provide strong growth momentum.
